The origin of the ghostly sheet seems to have been suggested by a photograph that Dalí took in Portlligat in 1932, in which you can see Gala and René Crevel half hidden behind the sheet. Totally or partially clothed figures appear in some works in this period. The volumetric anxiety is portrayed in the cloud in the centre of the canvas, which contrasts with the deepness of the landscape and the solitary nature of the character. In 1934, Dalí published the article "les nouvelles couleurs du sex-appeal spectral" in issue number 5 of the Minotaure magazine.
