Dalí exhibited it in the Salvador Dalí show held in the Julien Levy Gallery in New York in 1939. It is one of the most famous double images developed from his paranoiac-critical method: in the oil painting, at first sight we can see a female figure who is reading a letter in a room, with a map in the background, that recalls almost literally the famous Vermeer work, The Reader and, at the same time, with a simple acceptance by our perception, represents the portrait of Velasquez. With this double solution, in one single painting we have two of the most outstanding figures of the art world according to Dalí, Vermeer de Delft and Velasquez.
