Observations
Dalí painted "The Cosmic Athlete" in 1968, to a commission from the Spanish government agency for Physical Education and Sports, and the painting represented Spain at the Cultural Olympiad on the occasion of the Mexico Olympic Games of that same year. The then Vice President of the Spanish Olympic Committee, Anselmo López Martín, purchased the painting and subsequently ceded it on loan to Juan Carlos I, the future king of Spain, in 1971. Four years after the death of Anselmo López in 2004, the work was acquired by the Patrimonio Nacional heritage board in 2008.
