Shown at Dalí’s second one-man exhibition in the Dalmau Galleries in Barcelona from the 31st of December to the 14th of January 1927. This work must have been inspired by Dalí’s visit to Picasso’s Paris studio, the impact the visit had on him along with his expulsion that same year from the Fine Art School of San Fernando in Madrid, representing a change in Dalinian work and the beginning of innovative aesthetic paths. It is a structured, geometric, very carefully worked piece, with clear influences from Juan Gris and Georges Seurat. The figures are solid, corporeal, vegetative and totally integrated into the rocks. Dalí qualified these squatting feminine figures disdainfully as “wooden blocks”, wanting to define them as static elements of cork scattered over the earth.
