Dalí exhibited it in the Recent Paintings by Salvador Dalí show, held in the Bignou Gallery in New York, from the 20th of November to the 29th of December 1945, and in the catalogue he wrote about it: “I painted this work for two consecutive months, four hours a day. During this period the most surprising and sensational episodes occurred in contemporary history. This work was finished one day before the end of the war. Bread has always been one of the oldest fetishist and obsessive subject matters of my work, to which I have remained most faithful. Nineteen years ago I painted the same subject. If you make a detailed comparison between the two works, you can study the whole history of painting, from the lineal charm of primitivism through to the stereoscopic hyper-aestheticism. This typically realist work is the one that has most satisfied my imagination. Here we have a painting about which nothing can be said: the total enigma!”
