The exhibition proposes an overview of Dalí's life through photographs of his family, of his stay in Madrid, of his friendship with Buñuel and Lorca, of the Surrealist group, of the high society in Paris and New York, of his relations with cinema actors and directors, patrons of the arts, dancers, choreographers and bullfighters. It reveals, in short, a private Dalí and a public Dalía Dalí who liked to be seen as a complete and multi-facetted genius.
A few years ago, nearly 8,000 photos of Salvador Dalí and his wife Gala were discovered at the Portlligat house. Once catalogued at the Dali Study Centre, the Gala-Salvador Dalí Foundation and "la Caixa" Foundation organized the exhibition Salvador Dalí. Family Album which contained 77 of the hitherto unpublished photos, in addition to six pictorial works (on Freud, Crevel, Buñuel, Lorca and Puig Pujades), books, letters and manuscripts.
Commissioned by Fèlix Fanés and Montse Aguer, the exhibition was seen for the first time in the New Galleries of the Dalí Theatre-Museum of Figueres, from 1 December 1998 to 6 January 1999, from where it has toured to the following venues:
