This is the earliest documented unique original version of Dalí’s 1933 Retrospective Bust of a Woman. It has been possible to identify it from a photograph taken by Carl Van Vechten in 1934, which probably shows the window display of the Galerie Jacques Bonjean in Paris when the gallery hosted the Exposition Dalí. Although the details of the upper part of the bust cannot be appreciated in detail, it is clear that this version of the work does not include the loaf of bread, one of the most idiosyncratic elements of the original presented at the Galerie Pierre Colle the previous year.
