Observations

One of the series of seven compositions for "The Seven Lively Arts" commissioned by Billy Rose to decorate the Ziegfeld Theater — in this case, the theme is sports. The original seven paintings depicted the arts of radio, concert, ballet, opera, boogie-woogie, cinema and theatre. When they were destroyed in a fire at Billy Rose’s house, the artist agreed to recreate the seven paintings (see catalogue numbers 549, 588-593).
